A great portfolio includes headshots and portraits -- but what's the difference?

The truth is that even photographers can’t agree on the difference between a headshot and a portrait. For me, it’s pretty simple. A headshot shows one’s head and shoulders. That’s it! The purpose of a headshot is to visually convey a natural representation of one’s self to the viewer. This is why a headshot should be simple (no crazy clothes or backdrops), and must have an engaging expression.

A portrait, on the other hand, can be cropped in any number of ways and show 1/2 or 1/3 of the body, or even be from head to toe. Portraits can involve backdrops, props, a variety of clothing, and more, and can have a specific branding purpose. A portrait should reflect one’s personality and flair, and should be as unique as the subject. I like to provide my clients with what I call Creative Portraits, which also incorporate much more dramatic lighting and coloring, as well as a variety of compositional techniques.

So, now that you know the difference, the question becomes which do you need? The simple answer is BOTH! A headshot is perfect for LinkedIn, a Zoom profile photo, or a bio on a website. But a portrait can be used in any number of ways to promote your branding needs. It can be used throughout your website, in print or digital marketing materials, or connected to a Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn post designed to promote your services or products in a specific way. Having a variety of headshots and portraits is really the key. It’s all about building a great portfolio of images to use as needed.

So there you have it. Now that you know the difference between a headshot and a portrait, ask yourself if your current images represent you in the way you want and need them to.
